Mid Century Modern Scene: Austin, Texas
Mid Century Modern architecture began to get a foothold in Austin Texas after World War II when governmental and other forces pushed builders to create tract homes for suburban families.
These homes needed to be functional and affordable, a recipe the Mid Century Modern style fit perfectly. By prioritizing simplicity and practicality over status-establishing ornamentation, modern architects could create graceful and gorgeous homes for the growing middle class. In fact, after the war, Austin’s most prominent architects specialized in Mid-Century Modern design.
