The Legacy of the Alexander Construction Company in Palm Springs

he Alexander Construction Company, founded by George Alexander and his son, Robert Alexander, had an enormous impact on the residential development of Palm Springs from 1956 to 1965. After proving to his father, with the success of a small development in Los Angeles, that there was an untapped market for moderately priced modern homes, the Alexander Construction Company began to purchase empty desert land in Palm Springs. They hired talented architects versed in the modern vernacular and developed faster methods of building, which also was more economical and profitable. Building continued until 1965, when tragedy struck the family and Bob, George, and their wives, Jimmie and Helene, were among 8 passengers killed in a Lear jet crash near Palm Springs. The construction of these homes significantly increased the size of Palm Springs and caused the city to take on a new shape, direction, and character as an enclave of modern architecture, now referenced as mid-century modern style. These houses, collectively known as “Alexanders” have come to be appreciated for their rational designs, modernist style, and innovative construction.

Also, each guest receives a 60s retro box of Valentine’s Day candy. Our “WHAT WOULD YOU DO?” contest challenges guests to present their concept of renovating a Chalet Palms unit to builder/developer, Basil Collier, who hired the young Barry Berkus, still in his 20s, to design a new concept in gracious desert living. Basil will be poolside to judge the winning concept and present another romantic dinner for two at Acqua California Bistro to the winning designer/architect. Contests winners need not be present, drawings will take place poolside @ 11:45 a.m. Guests are invited to mingle by the pool with models in period swimwear and chat with Basil.

Modernism Week Showcase Home Tour: Gillman Residence Modernism Week 2020

Architectural aficionados of Herbert Burns’ trademark work in several apartment hotels including the Hideaway (originally the Town & Desert), Holiday House, and the Orbit In won’t want to miss this year’s Modernism Week Showcase Home: The Gillman Residence. This 1948 home of Dr. and Mrs. Gillman, described by architectural historian and author Steven Keylon as one of Burns’ “more lavish homes,” has been restored for Modernism Week 2020 by the dynamic duo at Thomboy Properties. Inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier in the style of Late Moderne, a precursor to what would later be termed “Modernism”, the Gillman house was designed to take advantage of the natural beauty of the desert as well as the appealing climate, with a functional, spacious and light filled interior.
