Session I, 20th Century Art + Design, Features unique and beautifully executed European glass and ceramics, from a diminutive George Woodall for Webb perfume bottle, a number of Scandinavian ceramics with unique glazes, to glassworks by Loetz, Galle, and Daum. A Southern collection features an Oriental Poppy and a Dragonfly table lamp, both by Tiffany. The sale also boasts some excellent examples of American ceramics, particularly a beautifully executed carved Pewabic vase with a spectacular metallic glaze, and a rare example by William J. Walley. Rookwood, Newcomb, Marblehead, Van Briggle, and Grueby round out the ceramics. A collection of Western fine art out of Cleveland, Ohio is also featured. This collection contains a number of bronzes and works of fine art featuring cowboys and American Indians. An L. & J.G. Stickley mantel clock and Charles Rohlfs chair feature in decorative Arts & Crafts items. Another collection out of Michigan contains a number of modern graphics from Sam Francis, Robert Motherwell, Ralph Humphrey, and Larry Zox, as well as a colorful wall sculpture by David Gerstein.

Time To Celebrate. Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale 2020. Show & Sale will offer Important 20th and 21st Century Furniture and Art Objects and Design Expo will offer Cutting-edge Modern Design and Technology at the most during Modernism Week.
Modernism Week. The 20th annual Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale is coming to the Palm Springs Convention Center February 14-17, 2020. Held in conjunction with Modernism Week, the worlds most important Modernism Show. The Lineup is spectacular: 90 premier national and international decorative and fine arts dealers with items representing all design movements of the 20th Century and select 21st century items.
Design Expo. The Show & Sale will be once again joined by the Palm Springs Modern Design Expo, a showcase of 40 dealers featuring contemporary cutting-edge home design products and technology. Weekend admission is $20 for both shows and includes return entry all weekend and a catalog. Show hours are Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Monday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tickets are available at palmspringsmodernism.com or at the door. The Palm Springs Convention Center is located at 277 N. Avenida Caballeros in Palm Springs.
Shipping Container Home. This year, an innovative and sleek pod-style prefab luxury shipping container unit from Buhaus Built will be on display outside the Palm Springs Convention Center. Designed by cofounders Nate Garnero and Douglas Burdge, AIA, the prefab is a 160 square foot dwelling unit made up of high-end finishes from Dornbracht to Corian. This multipurpose space is designed to be used as a backyard office, guest house, airbnb, and even as hotel rooms. It will be available for tours throughout the run of the Show & Sale. At the 20th Anniversary show, a free exhibition will be available to Modernism Week attendees in the Convention Center lobby outside the doors of the Show & Sale and Modern Design Expo. The Museum of California Design returns to the Show & Sale for the seventh year with the exhibition “Eat, Sit & Be Merry: California Designs for Children.” The post-World War II mid-century modern period was a particularly good time for children’s design in California. Eat, Sit & Be Merry: California Designs for Children will continue the Museum’s exploration of the state’s well-earned reputation as a source of innovative design, in this case through dishware, furniture, textiles and toys on a child-appropriate scale. The exhibition will feature modernist designs.

Frey House II Tours
Hosted by the Palm Springs Art Museum, these 40 minute docent led tours are a rare opportunity to see the residence of modernist architect, Albert Frey. A limited number will enjoy this unique experience and gain insight into this modern master’s architectural sensibility. Treadway Auction | Session II, African American Art
Session II, African American Art, represents the third auction this year of this type held in Cincinnati—the first two being major successes. This sale once again includes more than 125 lots of various mediums: painting, sculpture, original prints, and photography.
A single collection of photographs by Harlem Renaissance master, James Van Der Zee, which includes 14 images and an original price card from his studio in NYC, will be offered. The average estimate is $1500-$2500 per work. An important sculpture by Sargent Johnson will be included. The glazed terra cotta head, Female Egyptian Head, c. 1940, features an architectural element in the construction of the subject’s hair, and pencilled facial features. It was exhibited in the Johnson retrospective exhibition and is expected to sell for $30,000-$40,000. A very important painting by the legendary Miles Davis will be sold. The painting, 110” by 60”, comes from Davis’ personal assistant, Paul Toledano, and depicts the artist’s abstracted figures, reminiscent of Basquiat’s, whom Davis knew and shared influences. It is estimated at $70,000-$90,000.
On a more traditional note, Mary in Meditation , by Henry Ossawa Tanner, c. 1905, should get considerable interest. Painted at the height of the artist’s career, and featuring one of his favorite subjects, the oil is expected to fetch between $60,000-$80,000. An important oil by Hughie Lee-Smith, once in the collection of Malcolm Forbes, and recently included in a museum exhibition, will be offered at $60,000-$80,000. The painting, 24” by 36”, depicts one of the artist’s iconic images: figures on a rooftop, looking out over the city contemplating the human condition. There are several works by Lois Mailou Jones being offered, including a very nice post-impressionist landscape and several prints. A sculpture by Elizabeth Catlett, Cabeza Cantando , is estimated at $20,000-$30,000, and there are several nice lithographs also included by Catlett. Isaac Scott Hathaway worked as a sculptor in the early 20th century, creating images of important African Americans. There are four works in the auction: a bust of Booker T. Washington, a plaque of George Washington Carver, as well as a cast of his hand, and a circular plaque of Frederick Douglass. Five carborundum mezzotints by well regarded print-maker, Dox Thrash of Philadelphia are also included. Other notable artists represented are Charles Sebree, Margaret Burroughs, Rex Goreleigh, Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Emma Amos, Edward Bannister, Allan Crite, Robert Colescott, Ernest Crichlow, Mavis Pusey, Sam Gilliam, Claude Clark, Ralph Chesse, and many more.
